High and Low key lighting
High and Low-key lighting
This is used to create different moods
in the photograph, using the light to create a over all darker composition and
adds a sad kind of mood as darkness is associated with a feeling of being
nervous or unsettled. It can also hide
details of the subject creating a mysterious shadow on the subject. This can be
used to do horror as it can make the image have a spooky or creepy feel to it
depending on the subject you use. This could also symbolise the sort of unseen
part of a person as one side could be brightly lit where as the other side can
be hidden in shadow so this could be the part of a person they don’t want
people to see or maybe a secret.
On the other hand High key lighting can be used to create a
positive emotion due to the white background this can highlight certain parts
of the subject due to the high contrast between the background and the subject.
It could also be seen as a purer image due to white being a symbol of purity. The background being white can make parts of
the subject stand out for example a certain colour or shape. The white
background can reflect the light meaning the subject in complete light. This
means that people will focus on the subject more as there is very little or
nothing going on in the background.
